AfD wreath removal sparks altercation at Stauffenberg memorial ceremony

A scuffle broke out during a German government memorial ceremony commemorating the July 20, 1944, assassination attempt on Adolf Hitler. The incident occurred at the Bendlerblock memorial in Berlin when Tobias Korenke, a grandnephew of resistance fighter Dietrich Bonhoeffer, tried to remove a wreath laid by the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party.

Security personnel intervened, and a physical altercation ensued, resulting in damage to the wreath. Korenke expressed his anger, stating that many descendants, including himself, find it unacceptable for the AfD to lay wreaths at the commemoration. He declared, "We will not accept this here."

A spokesperson for the AfD parliamentary group confirmed that the party had provided a wreath for the ceremony. They could not confirm if any party members were present. Götz Frömming, head of the AfD parliamentary group's history working group, stated that the AfD, as a party represented in the Bundestag, is invited to these official commemorations.
