Africa CDC, WHO Investigate Potential Ebola Mutation Amidst Congo Outbreak

Health authorities in Africa, alongside the World Health Organization (WHO), are urgently investigating the possibility of an Ebola virus mutation. This concern arises from the exceptionally rapid and severe spread of cases in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The severity of this Bundibugyo outbreak is unprecedented.

Jean Kaseya, Director-General of Africa CDC, described the current Bundibugyo outbreak as "unprecedented" in its severity. He noted that the number of confirmed cases has surpassed 3,900, a figure more than eight times higher than the 2014 West Africa Ebola outbreak, which was previously the continent's most severe. The death toll has also been proportionally high, exceeding six times that of the earlier epidemic.

We are initiating some investigations to understand if there was a mutation. We need to clarify that and know how we can deal with it.

Kaseya stated that the scale of the outbreak is exceeding the capacity of response teams, despite ongoing efforts to expand capabilities. "We are building capacities, but this outbreak is exceeding our possibilities," he remarked during a briefing. He stressed that the construction of new laboratories and treatment centers would be meaningless if the virus transmission could not be stopped at the community level.
