Africa's hope now lies with Turkey

Turkey's relationship with Africa has transformed significantly under President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's "Africa opening" policy, strengthening ties through a vision of equal partnership. This engagement is symbolized by the observance of Africa Day on May 25, a date commemorating the continent's struggle against colonialism.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs highlighted Turkey's role as a strategic partner to the African Union, committed to supporting the continent's journey toward development, justice, and peace based on principles of equal partnership, mutual trust, and respect. This collaborative approach aims for win-win outcomes for all parties involved.

Key statistics illustrate the deepening ties: Turkey's embassies in Africa grew from 12 in 2002 to 44 by 2024, while African embassies in Ankara increased from 10 to 38. Trade volume with Africa has risen dramatically, projected to reach approximately $40 billion by the end of 2025, up from $4.3 billion in 2002. Turkish investments in Africa have soared to $10 billion in 2024 from $67 million in 2003, with Turkish contractors managing projects valued at $97 billion.

Turkey's relationship with the African Union has also evolved, moving from observer status in 2005 to strategic partner in 2008. This partnership has been institutionalized through a series of Turkey-Africa Partnership Summits, starting in 2008. The upcoming summit is currently under meticulous preparation.

Beyond economic and diplomatic ties, Turkey's influence in Africa is also attributed to President Erdoğan's "The world is bigger than five" stance, which resonates widely across the continent. Furthermore, Turkey's defense industry products offer hope to nations in difficult situations, and Ankara's mediation efforts contribute to resolving regional conflicts and crises. The expanding network of Turkish embassies globally plays a crucial role in these diplomatic successes.
