African Federations to Play Decisive Role in World Chess Leadership Election

The upcoming presidential election for the International Chess Federation (FIDE) in Samarkand on September 26 will be heavily influenced by African federations, which hold significant voting power. With 51 of Africa's 54 countries as members, the continent represents one of the largest and most cohesive voting blocs in world chess.

Under FIDE's electoral rules, presidential candidates must secure endorsements from five to eight member federations, crucially spanning all four continental regions: Africa, the Americas, Asia, and Europe. This requirement makes African federations indispensable gatekeepers, as no candidate can reach the ballot without their active support.

This year, three candidates are vying for the presidency, and all are actively seeking the support of African federations, as there is no incumbent president to defer to. The candidates recognize the continent's pivotal role, with events like the African Continental Stage of the FIDE–ISCF World Schools Team Championship recently held in Cape Town, drawing attention from federations and officials.

Timur Turlov, the frontrunner, is a Moscow-born, Kazakh-naturalized entrepreneur and founder of the financial services and technology group Freedom Holding Corp. His campaign is backed by substantial financial investment in chess, with Freedom reportedly putting over $15 million annually into the sport and investing $75 million over three years. Turlov has also spoken of Freedom's existing commercial presence in South Africa and his plans to build "sustainable chess ecosystems" on the continent.

Turlov's significant financial backing and his leadership roles in both the Kazakhstan Chess Federation and the International School Chess Federation (ISCF) position him as a strong contender. His campaign's engagement with African chess communities underscores the continent's decisive influence in shaping the future leadership of world chess.
