After 20 Years of Singing It, Echo Frontman’s Father Hears the Band Live for the First Time

For Echo of Your Soul, the night of Aug. 29 at Taipei’s Legacy was more than a comeback concert. It brought the band back to the stage in its full five-member lineup after an eight-year hiatus, and gave two family members a deeply personal reason to celebrate.

Although I joined the band’s last comeback performance as a guest, this time I have truly returned as a band member. Completing an album and a performance with everyone is not only the joy of playing in a band again, it feels like being given a new chance to turn my life around as I enter middle age.

Keyboardist Shipy had returned to the group after stepping away to spend time with his young children. He had made a guest appearance at the band’s 2023 comeback performance, but this time he officially rejoined the lineup. His child stood in the audience that night, watching him perform as his biggest fan.

Lead singer Bo-Tsang also had a first to mark. His father attended a concert after more than 20 years of his son’s singing career. Before the encore performance of “The Desire to Be Spoiled,” Bo-Tsang told the crowd, “I want to tell my dad, this song is pretty popular.” He also said he hoped his father would feel proud of the show.

I have been singing these songs for more than 20 years, and this time my father came to support me for the first time. I hope tonight’s performance makes him proud.

The concert promoted the band’s fifth album, “Echo of Your Soul,” which took three years to complete after Echo of Your Soul announced its return to music in 2023. The set included familiar songs such as “Dear John,” “Gun Smoke” and “Fashionable,” along with new tracks including “Because I Love You So,” “Whose Heart Forgot” and “We Are Together at the End of the World.”

The new songs use an apocalyptic theme and draw on images from science-fiction films, turning technical subject matter into rock songs centered on love. The band has also released six remastered tracks under the concept “Echoes of Memory.” Drummer Chun-You said the project preserved the original piano and acoustic-guitar arrangements while using current recording technology. Echo of Your Soul will travel to Japan for its first dedicated concert there in October.

Completing the remastered edition of Echoes of Memory was like looking back through our youth. Using today’s technology, we kept the original piano and acoustic-guitar arrangements intact, as if preserving Echo’s earliest form.
