After Magdeburg Election, AfD Leader Says ‘Firewall’ Will Become History

Sebastian Münzenmaier, the AfD leader in Rhineland-Palatinate, says his party’s strong performance in Saxony-Anhalt will send repercussions far beyond the eastern state. He said the result would affect federal politics and his own western state.

“We clearly won the election. We received a mandate to govern from the people of Saxony-Anhalt,” Münzenmaier said. He argued that the success would radiate “far beyond the borders of Saxony-Anhalt,” allowing more people to see that “the AfD wants to govern, the AfD is popular, the AfD can govern.”

Münzenmaier announced that the AfD aims to become the strongest party in Rhineland-Palatinate at the 2031 state election. He said the party was “on the best path” and continuing to grow.

On policy, Münzenmaier called for a “real change in migration policy,” an end to the “so-called energy transition” and a reduction of public broadcasting to a “basic service.”
