Agege LG boss kicks off 2026 Obasa Summer Games

Abdul-Ganiyu Vinod Obasa, Executive Chairman of Agege Local Government, officially kicked off the 2026 Obasa Summer Games U16. This grassroots football tournament involves 28 teams from across the Agege area, aiming to foster young talent.

The competition, which began on August 14, includes 20 male and eight female teams. They will compete in 52 matches over three weeks at various venues, including Ideal Primary School and Orile-Agege and Oniwaya High School. Themed “Rising Stars. Growing Together. One Future,” the tournament offers a total cash prize of N2 million, shared between the winners of the male and female categories.

Sixteen male and four female teams took part in the last edition; this year, we have increased the number to 20 and eight, respectively. It is really grassroots, as the teams will be playing on sand surface pitches.

Obasa stated that the competition's primary goal is to create platforms for young talents to showcase their abilities, regardless of their skill level. He noted a significant increase in participating teams compared to the previous edition, which had 16 male and four female teams. The games are being played on sand surface pitches, emphasizing their grassroots nature.

Highlighting the tournament's success, Obasa mentioned that a talent discovered through the games has already been invited to train with the national U17 team, the Golden Eaglets. He also revealed plans to establish Agege City FC, a community team, by the end of the year. This team will be built around players scouted from the Summer Games, joining other Lagos-based clubs like Ikorodu City and Sporting Lagos. Obasa stressed that sports development is a key pathway for young talents in Agege to express themselves and make career decisions.
