Agra At 20 - Charting Uganda's Next Chapter in Agricultural Transformation

Uganda's agricultural sector, the backbone of its economy, faces a persistent paradox despite significant investments in research and farmer support over the last 20 years. While the nation is recognized as a regional food basket, the promise of agricultural innovation has yet to translate into lasting prosperity for millions of smallholder farmers.

Scientists have developed improved crop varieties, policies have been strengthened, and access to finance and markets has expanded. Yet, the central question dominating discussions at the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) @20 Uganda Country Celebration in Kampala was how to ensure these advancements benefit farmers directly. The event brought together scientists, policymakers, agribusiness leaders, and development partners.

Dr. Patience Rwamigisa, Commissioner for Extension Coordination at the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries, encapsulated the dilemma: "We have a strong agricultural research system. However, how do we move those technologies beyond research institutions and into farmers' fields?" This question underscored the need to address challenges in research, extension services, seed systems, markets, and finance to unlock agriculture's full economic potential for Uganda's population.
