Ahn Kwang-yul Elected Leader of Gyeonggi Provincial Assembly's Democratic Party Bloc

Ahn Kwang-yul, a three-term assembly member, has been elected the new leader of the Democratic Party bloc within the Gyeonggi Provincial Assembly. The election, held Tuesday, saw 143 out of the 144 Democratic Party members in the assembly participate. Ahn secured 78 votes, narrowly defeating his rival Choi Man-sik, who garnered 65 votes.

Following his victory, Ahn Kwang-yul pledged to focus on delivering tangible results for the residents of Gyeonggi Province. He stated his commitment to supporting the success of the current administration and paving a new path for the province, acknowledging the significant responsibility that comes with his new role.

In addition to electing their new leader, the Democratic Party also selected candidates for the assembly's speaker and vice-speaker positions. Nam Jong-seop was nominated as the candidate for speaker, facing no opposition. Given that the Democratic Party holds 144 out of the 156 seats in the assembly, Nam is widely expected to be officially elected as the 12th Gyeonggi Provincial Assembly speaker.

For the vice-speaker positions, Ko Eun-jeong was nominated for the first vice-speaker, winning 91 votes against Lee Sun-gu's 50. Kim Mi-sook was selected as the second vice-speaker candidate, narrowly beating Kim Jong-bae by a single vote, 63 to 62. The Gyeonggi Provincial Assembly is scheduled to officially elect its speaker and vice-speakers at a plenary session on July 7.
