AI Bots Now Drive More Web Traffic Than Humans, Cloudflare Reports

Artificial intelligence has effectively taken over the internet, with automated systems, now often referred to as "agentic AI," generating more web traffic than humans. Cloudflare, a major web security and speed company, reported that bots and AI agents account for 57.4% of requests to the websites it protects, leaving humans with only 42.6% of the generated traffic. This marks the first time AI-driven activity has exceeded human online presence.

Matthew Prince, co-founder and CEO of Cloudflare, expressed surprise at the speed of this development, stating he had predicted this crossover point would occur later, around 2027. The surge is largely attributed to the proliferation of AI chatbots. These systems constantly scan the web for information to answer user queries. Prince highlighted the efficiency difference, noting that while a human might visit five websites to make a purchase, an AI chatbot can analyze the same item across 5,000 pages in a fraction of the time.

It happened faster than I predicted. I thought this moment would arrive at the end of 2027, then early 2027, but traffic generated by agents has grown so rapidly that bots have already surpassed human traffic online for the first time in the history of the internet.

The influence of bots extends beyond simple web searches and online shopping. Social media platforms are also undergoing significant changes. Automated systems are increasingly used for posting and commenting, often with the aim of spreading propaganda, as exemplified by Russia's Internet Research Agency. Furthermore, bots are becoming the primary audience on some social platforms. Moltbook, an infrastructure exclusively for AI systems, attracted 1.6 million autonomous agents in its first week, fostering unique interaction dynamics and belief systems akin to a cult, with no human participation.
