AI Drones to Enhance Public Safety in Daegu

Daegu, South Korea, is set to launch an advanced public safety initiative using artificial intelligence (AI) drones. Starting next month, these drones will actively patrol the city, enhancing security for large gatherings and monitoring critical infrastructure like rivers.

The first major deployment will be at the Daegu Chimac Festival, an event expected to draw over a million people. The AI drones will use video analysis to identify people and vehicles, providing real-time monitoring of crowd density and potential safety issues. This aims to ensure the smooth and secure operation of the large-scale festival.

Following the festival, the drones will shift focus to inspecting national rivers, including the Nakdong and Geumho rivers, from September to October. They will identify cracks and damage in river facilities in areas difficult for humans to access. The drones will also detect illegal land occupation and unauthorized farming, improving the efficiency of river management and quickly identifying illicit activities.

From November to December, the AI drones will concentrate on urban security in areas identified as vulnerable, such as near the Gangchang Bridge and Samunjin. Their tasks will include searching for missing persons and monitoring for risks like falls or suicide attempts from bridges. The city plans to utilize domestically developed AI drones for these operations, underscoring a commitment to advancing local technology in the aviation industry.
