AI Firm Cohere to Launch Korean Subsidiary, Focusing on Sovereign AI Solutions

AI solutions provider Cohere is accelerating its expansion in the Asia-Pacific region, with plans to establish a Korean subsidiary by the end of the year. The company aims to bolster its presence by offering customized sovereign AI solutions that empower businesses and governments to directly own and control their AI infrastructure.

Cohere's strategy involves setting up local entities in South Korea and Japan, strengthening public sector collaborations in Singapore, and doubling its technical and sales teams by year-end, with a further fourfold increase planned by the end of 2027. Founded in Canada in 2019, Cohere specializes in enterprise AI foundation models and end-to-end products, targeting corporations and governments rather than consumer-facing chatbots.

Central to Cohere's offering is its interpretation of "sovereign AI." Frank O’Dowd, Cohere's Chief Revenue Officer, explained that the core of sovereign AI lies not in who develops it, but in who controls it. By deploying AI within a company's or government's own infrastructure, users gain direct control over their data and access rights, regardless of the model used. Cohere's solutions can be deployed on public clouds, private on-premises servers, or even in air-gapped environments, ensuring operational continuity even amidst geopolitical risks or policy changes abroad.

Cohere highlights its ability to provide end-to-end control over data, models, and infrastructure, positioning itself as a sovereign AI company. Its 'North' platform integrates seamlessly with existing systems, offering tailored AI solutions optimized for private and sovereign environments, meeting strict regulatory and security requirements. O’Dowd noted that companies are using 'North' to automate complex tasks in finance, sales, HR, and IT. The company also emphasizes its technological efficiency, developing models that require fewer computing resources, making them suitable for environments with limited GPU capacity or poor connectivity.

Looking ahead, Cohere sees significant growth potential in the Korean market due to its advanced ICT infrastructure, skilled workforce, and high national interest in sovereign AI.
