AI restores likeness of fallen South Korean Coast Guard officers in moving tribute

The South Korean Coast Guard is honoring its fallen officers through a poignant memorial video that utilizes artificial intelligence to restore their likenesses, bringing them back to life in tribute. The initiative, launched on the Coast Guard's official website, features 10 officers who died while protecting the nation's waters and citizens.

Using a combination of photographs, video footage, and voice recordings, the AI technology digitally recreated the officers as they appeared in their prime. The 4-minute and 30-second video, posted on the official website's Cyber Memorial Hall, aims to provide a deeply moving tribute. The Coast Guard collected data from 49 officers who died within the last 20 years, obtaining consent from their families for this project.

Among those featured is the late Senior Inspector Lee Cheong-ho, who died in 2011 while confronting illegal Chinese fishing vessels. The AI restored him smiling brightly while embracing his son and daughter under a cherry blossom tree. Senior Inspector Cho Dong-soo, who passed away in 2017 due to complications from a rescue operation, is depicted in his uniform, saluting crisply in front of a patrol boat. His children now serve in the Navy and Coast Guard, following in his footsteps.

Senior Inspector Lee Jae-seok, who died in September 2025, is shown smiling with his family and colleagues; he had given his life vest to an elderly person stranded on a mudflat. Senior Inspector Oh Jin-seok, who died of sepsis in 2015 after a collision during an emergency response, is recreated attending his daughter's wedding, a ceremony he missed in life. The video has resonated deeply with viewers, who have left comments expressing gratitude and remembrance.

Kim Ki-yong, spokesperson for the Coast Guard, stated that the project is a measure to further honor the deceased officers and their spirit of sacrifice.
