Air transportation remains the safest

Air travel stands as the safest mode of transportation worldwide, a fact that holds true for Nigeria as well. This assertion is supported by a comparative analysis of accident rates, speed, comfort, technology, and regulatory oversight.

Data from Nigeria's Federal Road Safety Commission reveals a stark contrast between road and air travel. In 2024, the nation experienced 9,570 road accidents, resulting in 5,421 deaths. This figure rose to 10,446 accidents in 2025, with 5,289 fatalities. Injuries also remained high, with 31,154 people injured in 2024 and 33,400 in 2025.

Conversely, Nigeria recorded zero fatal commercial air accidents between 2024 and 2025. While there was a Nigerian Air Force training jet crash in 2024 where both pilots survived, and an Air Peace passenger plane skidded off the runway in Port Harcourt in July 2025, all 127 passengers and crew were safely evacuated without injuries. Recent reports highlight the ongoing dangers of road travel, with one article on July 7, 2026, detailing 32 deaths and 26 injuries from just three separate road crashes.

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau is responsible for investigating all transportation incidents.
