Ajayi Fails in Bid to Become Commonwealth Games’ Fastest Sprinter, Settles for Bronze

Team Nigeria's hopes for gold in the men's 100m sprint at the Commonwealth Games were dashed as favorite Kanyisola Ajayi secured a bronze medal. Ajayi finished with a time of 9.90 seconds, falling short of his national record of 9.84 seconds set prior to the Games.

The gold medal went to Cameroon's Emmanuel Eseme, who set a new Games Record with a blistering 9.83 seconds. Australia's Lachlan Kennedy claimed the silver medal, achieving a personal best of 9.85 seconds.

Earlier in the semifinals, two other Nigerian sprinters, Favour Ashe and Adekalu Nicolas Fakorede, failed to advance to the final race. Ashe finished sixth in his semifinal heat with 10.07 seconds, while Fakorede placed fourth in his heat with 10.06 seconds.

In the women's 100m, Nigerian athletes also struggled. Blessing Ogundiran did not start her semifinal race, and Rosemary Chukwuma finished last in her heat after apparently slowing down due to a recurring hamstring injury. Oluebube Ezechukwu also missed the cut for the final, finishing fourth in her semifinal with 11.23 seconds.

Other Nigerian competitors also faced challenges. In the women's high jump, Temitope Adeshina was joint leader with Jamaica's Lamara Distin at 1.82m before rain interrupted the event. Oyesade Olatoye finished eighth in the women's hammer throw, and Ruth Imoleayo Ayodele placed seventh in the women's 63kg weightlifting category.
