AKPABIO: THREE YEARS ON

Three years into his tenure as President of Nigeria’s 10th Senate, Godswill Akpabio has steered the legislative body toward positioning itself as a stable, proactive, and policy-driven institution. Amidst Nigeria's economic headwinds and security challenges, the Senate has been expected to provide leadership and restore public confidence.

Legislative output has been substantial, with an ambitious agenda targeting pressing national issues. According to Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, the upper chamber introduced 983 bills and passed 108 into law between June 2023 and June 2025. This marks a notable increase, with 83 bills passed in the 2024/2025 legislative year alone, compared to 25 in the 9th Senate during the same period.

Beyond sheer volume, the Senate's focus has been on reforms with far-reaching implications. Efforts are concentrated on stimulating economic growth, improving public finance management, strengthening institutions, and expanding social protection. A defining undertaking has been the commitment to tax reform and fiscal modernization, addressing long-standing criticisms of Nigeria’s fragmented tax system, weak compliance, and over-reliance on oil revenue.

While critics have raised concerns, a common feature of democratic leadership, the Senate has remained active and focused on its constitutional responsibilities during a period of national transition.
