Alcaraz outguns Paul to reach US Open quarter-finals

Carlos Alcaraz overpowered Tommy Paul in a high-voltage contest at Arthur Ashe Stadium, beating the American 20th seed 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 to reach the U.S. Open quarter-finals.

The Spaniard produced the kind of shotmaking that has made him the player to beat in New York. He extended his major match-winning streak to 18 and stayed on course for consecutive titles at Flushing Meadows, just months after returning from a right wrist injury.

Paul briefly lifted the home crowd with a spectacular 100 mph forehand winner around the net in the third game. Alcaraz held firm, then struck late to take the opening set. He created an early opening in the second with a crosscourt winner and quickly moved 2-0 ahead before trading breaks and taking control.

I tried to play to my style. Tommy's such a talented player and his shots are pretty dangerous and it's difficult to control the ball when it comes to you. I was ready for a battle.

Even as much of the crowd hoped for an American winner, Alcaraz continued to dictate with aggressive play. He reached match point with a powerful forehand, then recovered after a brief wobble at the finish to close out the match.

I was trying to be aggressive all the time ... I did well to put pressure on his return, which helped me stay calm and to think clearly. I was really happy with the performance.

Alcaraz said he was trying to play his own style and keep pressure on Paul’s return. He said New York remained a special place for him, adding that he enjoys playing there even after missing more than four months. His next opponent will be Shelton or Tsitsipas.

It shows how special this place is to me, I'm just enjoying myself on court here. It doesn't matter that I was out for over four months. Every time I come here I play well.
