Alejandra Mizala elected new rector of the University of Chile

Economist Alejandra Mizala Salces will assume the rectorship of the University of Chile for the 2026-2030 term, following her victory in the election's second round on Tuesday.

Mizala garnered 60.3% of the votes, surpassing her opponent, academic Francisco Martínez, who received 39.07%. This win follows her leading position in the first round on May 12, where she obtained nearly 43% of the ballots among four candidates.

Mizala, an economist from the University of Chile with a Ph.D. from UC Berkeley, is a full professor at the Faculty of Physical and Mathematical Sciences. She brings over 37 years of academic experience in teaching, research, and public policy design. Previously, she served as the university's pro-rector from 2022 to 2026.

She will succeed Rosa Devés, who made history in 2022 as the first woman to lead the university in its 180-year history. Mizala expressed that assuming the role holds special significance after Devés's pioneering leadership. "Chile needs public institutions capable of expanding horizons, reducing inequalities, and building citizenship," Mizala stated, highlighting the university's historical mission. She conveyed her recognition, admiration, and gratitude to Devés for opening decisive paths for the institution and for women in academia.
