Alert in the United States for a cyclosporiasis outbreak: causes "explosive diarrhea" and a famous food chain is investigated

The United States is grappling with a significant outbreak of cyclosporiasis, an intestinal infection caused by a microscopic parasite, which has spread to at least 30 states. Health authorities are analyzing over 5,000 cases, with 80 individuals requiring hospitalization.

According to The Washington Post, state health agencies are investigating the exponential rise in cases and have flagged the fast-food chain Taco Bell as a potential source. Investigators suspect the chain may have distributed products contaminated with *Cyclospora*.

Taco Bell, in response, issued a statement asserting that health authorities have not confirmed any link to the company. "The health and safety of our customers are our top priority. Public health authorities have not confirmed any link to Taco Bell or any particular ingredient, supplier, restaurant, or establishment," the company stated. As a precautionary measure, Taco Bell has voluntarily and temporarily removed certain ingredients from some restaurants while the investigation continues.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports 1,645 confirmed cases nationwide this year, with an additional 5,100 requiring further analysis. Several states have seen a notable increase compared to the same period in 2025. In Michigan, the hardest-hit state with 2,600 cases, interviews with over 1,000 patients suggest lettuce or other leafy greens as a possible source, although other foods cannot be entirely ruled out.
