Alessandro Di Battista’s return to Italy delayed after surgery in Cuba

Alessandro Di Battista’s return to Italy has been postponed after the former Five Star Movement lawmaker underwent surgery in Cuba.

“Di Battista’s return has been postponed. We ask everyone to show the utmost discretion and caution in sharing information pending further updates,” the Schierarsi association said in an Instagram post. The association was founded by Di Battista, who also shared the message on his account.

Di Battista had been expected to return to Italy that afternoon by air ambulance, with the costs covered by an insurance policy he had taken out. He had announced the planned return himself on social media.

The former lawmaker was taken ill on the evening of Aug. 28 and admitted to a hospital in Santa Clara. He was later transferred to Havana’s Hermanos Ameijeiras Hospital, where he remains. A medical team from Rome’s Gemelli Polyclinic also traveled to Cuba to assist the Cuban hospital’s doctors. Di Battista had been in Cuba working on a journalistic report.
