Algeria allocates 717 million dinars for major school reform

Algeria's Ministry of Education is set to launch a significant reform of the country's school system for the 2026-2030 period, backed by an investment of 717 million dinars. This initiative aims to enhance the quality and equity of public education.

The reform will encompass a comprehensive revision of school programs and a reorganization of the school day to better suit students' pedagogical and psychological needs. A key component is the acceleration of the digital transition within educational institutions, reflecting a modern approach to learning.

Responding to a parliamentary inquiry about deteriorating school infrastructure and past reform failures, the ministry outlined that the new direction is informed by national consultations and the Superior Council of Education. The plan also prioritizes strengthening teacher training, developing preschool education, restructuring vocational and technical training pathways, and re-evaluating the role of languages in the curriculum to balance Arabic language proficiency with foreign language acquisition.

Infrastructure improvements are also a major focus, with 1.5 billion dinars invested over the past five years. These funds supported over 5,500 projects in more than 3,300 schools, including new constructions, essential maintenance, and upgrades to water supply and security systems. For 2026 alone, plans include building 19 new schools, adding 514 classrooms, and rehabilitating 464 existing facilities, with a particular emphasis on rural areas. The allocated 717 million dinars for 2026, a nearly 20% increase from 2025, will specifically support these infrastructure and equipment projects, furthering the reform's implementation.
