Algerian diaspora in South Africa hailed as model community

Algerian Secretary of State for the National Community Abroad, Sofiane Chaïb, met with members of the Algerian diaspora in Pretoria, South Africa, emphasizing dialogue and bilateral partnership. The gathering included the Algerian ambassador to South Africa, Ali Achoui, and brought together Algerians primarily from academic, scientific research, and economic sectors.

Chaïb lauded the diaspora's unique profile, describing them as a "model of qualitative community contributing to showcasing Algerian capabilities and reflecting an honorable image of national competence in the African space." He noted his own background, including a doctorate and diplomatic experience, as part of his engagement with communities abroad.

The visit is part of Chaïb's broader effort to maintain a constant link with Algerians living overseas, with previous trips to Europe and the Middle East. During the meeting, reforms undertaken by the Algerian state for its citizens abroad were presented, focusing on the digitalization of consular services and the simplification of administrative procedures. The stated goal is to "strengthen the quality of public service and bring the administration closer to the citizen wherever they are."

Chaïb underscored the strategic importance of resuming direct flights between Algiers and Johannesburg, operated by Air Algérie three times weekly since January 16, 2026, after a suspension in 2024. He stated this resumption "represents an important achievement likely to inject additional momentum into bilateral relations and facilitate travel for people and economic operators," while also reinforcing human connections between the two nations. Algeria's Minister of Finance, Laaziz Faid, had previously called the direct flight line a "strong symbol capable of broadening understanding between two brotherly countries."
