Alhassan Yusuf Finally Here to Stay?

Alhassan Yusuf is making a determined effort to establish a permanent presence with Nigeria's senior national football team, the Super Eagles. For much of his international career, Yusuf has operated in the background, with discussions about Nigeria's midfield often centering on other prominent players.

Despite being a squad member, Yusuf rarely commanded the spotlight. An opportunity arose during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations when an injury to Wilfred Ndidi led to a late call-up. Yusuf made a promising start, but another injury during the tournament halted his progress. As the team advanced, he found himself in a more supportive role, missing the chance to cement his place.

Yusuf recently delivered his finest international performance, scoring twice in the Unity Cup final against Jamaica after an impressive showing against Zimbabwe. The former IFK Goteborg player's journey with the Super Eagles began under José Peseiro, who gave him significant playing time at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. Yusuf displayed fearlessness and maturity in the opening match against Equatorial Guinea, covering ground aggressively and pressing opponents effectively.

Despite the promise shown, consistent playing time has remained elusive. The thigh injury sustained during the AFCON proved to be a significant setback, disrupting his momentum at a critical juncture. While his talent is evident, Yusuf is now focused on capitalizing on his recent successes to secure a lasting spot in the national team.
