Alicante summer crackdown on street counterfeits seizes more than 50,000 products

Alicante police seized more than 50,000 counterfeit products during a summer crackdown on illegal street selling, with authorities estimating their market value at more than 2 million euros.

The local police carried out the operations in July and August in cooperation with port police. Officers made 13 arrests for offenses against industrial property. The seized goods included shirts and other clothing, jewelry, handbags and mobile-phone cases.

Police increased surveillance as tourists filled the city’s seafront, promenade and Port Square. In one operation on Aug. 30 at Port Square, officers seized more than 3,000 counterfeit products from both street-vending stalls and stalls with authorization.

The city also reinforced a special operation against drinking alcohol in public. That campaign resulted in 587 reports opened by Alicante local police during July and August.

“Selling counterfeit products and drinking alcohol in the street are two practices against which the Local Police act throughout the year, but they intensify during the summer, so at this time we reinforce operations and interventions to guarantee safety and compliance with regulations,” said Security Councillor Julio Calero.
