Alice Merton opens door to composing for theater and opera

Alice Merton, the international star behind the hit "No Roots," is eager to expand her musical horizons into composing for dramatic productions. The 32-year-old singer recently concluded an engagement at the Nibelungen Festival in Worms, Germany, where she composed and performed soundtracks for the play "Die Hunnenkönigin."

"I feel like a door has been opened," Merton told the German Press Agency. She noted that the festival allowed her to write more "dramatic songs" than she typically does. "If someone needs music: Here I am!" she declared.

Merton and guitarist Alexander Wolfe not only composed the soundtrack but also performed it live each evening. Their work earned them the Mario Adorf Prize, recognizing their contribution to the festival. The experience in Worms reinforced Merton's fascination with how melodies can convey powerful emotions and narratives without words.

As an opera enthusiast, Merton dreams of a contemporary take on the art form, blending genres like rock, pop, jazz, or soul with grand narratives and emotions. She expressed a desire to collaborate with a writer to develop a story and create its accompanying music, hoping this recent project is not her last foray into theatrical composition.
