All 14 pig farms secured after Geestferkel insolvency

A solution has been found for all 14 pig farming locations previously operated by the insolvent Geestferkel GmbH in Saxony-Anhalt, offering a perspective for continued operation or at least the ongoing care of the animals. The company, one of Germany's largest weaner producers, filed for insolvency at the end of July.

The insolvency impacted around 106,000 pigs in Saxony-Anhalt. While solutions have now been secured for all sites, the future of one location remained uncertain until recently. The state administration office in Halle confirmed that new investors or operators have been found, or agreements have been reached for the remaining farms.

Authorities have assured that the animals' welfare is currently secured, with sufficient feed available at all locations. There are no indications of acute problems with electricity or water supply, or other threats to animal well-being. However, responsible veterinary authorities will continue to closely monitor the sites, checking feed and water supplies, as well as the animals' health.

Earlier in August, the situation was described as "highly critical" due to feed supplies at some locations lasting only a few days. Initially, prospects were created for 10 of the 14 facilities about a week prior to this update. Nationwide, the insolvency affects over 200,000 animals.
