Alleged drug lord 'Araña' extradited from Colombia to US, linking Ecuador

Geovanny Andrés Rojas, a high-ranking figure within the Comandos de la Frontera, has been extradited from Colombia to the United States to face serious drug trafficking charges.

Alias 'Araña' is considered a key leader of the Comandos de la Frontera, an organization with a significant presence in Putumayo, a Colombian department bordering Ecuador. This region is a crucial corridor for illegal activities, including coca cultivation and cocaine production.

Ecuador's government identified Rojas as a foreign military target in 2024 due to the Comandos de la Frontera's operations near its northern border. The organization's activities in the border region have drawn the attention of Ecuadorian authorities, who have previously apprehended individuals linked to the group.

The extradition, ordered by the Colombian government, was previously suspended due to Rojas's involvement in dialogue processes with the administration of former President Gustavo Petro. His judicial record dates back to 2008, and he has previously been linked to other armed groups like Los Rastrojos.

The United States requires Rojas to answer charges including drug trafficking, criminal conspiracy, and narcoterrorism, highlighting the international scope of his alleged criminal activities and the cooperation between nations to combat them.
