Almaty police have implemented an enhanced operational mode in response to significant power outages that have disrupted city infrastructure, including traffic lights. Over 150 officers are now deployed to manage traffic flow in busy and vulnerable areas, with an increased number of patrol crews monitoring the road situation.

The power disruptions began around 2:30 PM on August 14, affecting several districts including Bostandyk, Nauryzbay, Auezov, and Alatau. Kazakhstan's Ministry of Energy attributed the outages to a power surge caused by a sudden shift in electricity flow from the Central Asian power system. This surge triggered automated protection systems, leading to temporary disconnections for consumers.

In addition to traffic light failures, residents have reported communication issues and potential disruptions to the water supply. The Alatau Zharyq Company JSC is working on repairs to restore power. The Jetisu region, including Taldykorgan and Tekeli, also experienced power losses.
