Almgren Aims to Reclaim Swedish 1,500m Record at Bauhaus Gala

Swedish runner Andreas Almgren, a holder of seven national records, is setting his sights on reclaiming the Swedish record for the 1,500 meters at the upcoming Bauhaus Gala. The record is currently held by Samuel Pihlström, and the two are set to compete head-to-head on Sunday, June 7.

Almgren has had a strong start to the year, beginning with an improvement of his own European record in the 10-kilometer road race in Valencia by eight seconds. He then broke his Swedish record in the 3,000 meters at the Diamond League premiere in Shanghai three weeks prior to the Bauhaus Gala. Despite these successes, he withdrew from a 5,000-meter race in Xiamen, citing difficulty in recovering between events after a strenuous training session.

He explained that his usual approach involves adapting training for a fatigued body after intense sessions, but opted for competition in China to maintain motivation. Almgren feels he has significantly improved since returning from his Asian competitions and is highly motivated for what he considers the "real competition season."

Last year, Almgren set a European record in the 5,000 meters at the Stockholm Stadium. This year, he will focus on the 1,500 meters. His personal best is 3:32.00, and to regain the Swedish record, he needs to run faster than Pihlström's 3:30.87. Almgren expressed his desire to take back the record if the opportunity arises, acknowledging Pihlström's strong performance, including a fourth-place finish at the World Indoor Championships.

While acknowledging the duel with Pihlström, Almgren stated his primary focus will be on running his own race and aiming to outperform as many competitors as possible, rather than directly marking his rival.
