Alonso axes five senior Chelsea players in squad clear-out

New Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso is reportedly initiating a significant squad overhaul, informing five senior players that they are free to depart the club. This move comes less than a week into pre-season training, signaling Alonso's intent to reshape the team according to his vision.

According to Portuguese outlet A Bola, the players identified are goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen, defenders Axel Disasi and Benoit Badiashile, winger Alejandro Garnacho, and striker Liam Delap. These five players, with a combined estimated market value of £160 million, are now expected to seek new opportunities elsewhere this summer. The report suggests that interest from other clubs has already been communicated to some of these players, including Garnacho.

Alonso, who took charge of Chelsea this summer, has hinted at potential departures, stating, "We have spoken to the sporting director and there’s interest from him, from another club, so let’s see how it develops. I hope it finishes in the best possible way for all parties." Several of the players informed of their potential exit endured challenging seasons. Garnacho, who joined from Manchester United last summer, scored eight goals in 43 appearances. Delap also struggled, managing two goals in 41 games after his move from Ipswich Town. Badiashile saw limited action, while Disasi fell out of favor and was loaned out for the latter half of the campaign. Goalkeeper Jorgensen made only 12 appearances. Chelsea has already bolstered Alonso's squad with new signings Geovany Quenda, Emmanuel Emegha, and Marco Palestra, and more arrivals are expected as players involved in the FIFA World Cup return for pre-season training.
