Alsemberg’s Sint-Victor Primary School Fully Renovated: “Care Teachers No Longer Have to Sit in the Basement”

After about six months of work, the primary school at the Sint-Victor Institute in Alsemberg is almost fully renewed for the start of the school year. Director Dennis Bultereys said the result was worth the effort, although some walls still needed a final coat of paint.

Workers replaced the walls and floors, installed underfloor heating and updated the pipes and sanitary facilities. The renovation began after the spring half-term break and was completed under a tight schedule.

The school’s special primary education section moved to a new building elsewhere on the site. That freed an entire floor in the main building, allowing all primary pupils to attend classes in the same building for the first time in around 25 years.

The renovation also created four care classrooms, one for kindergarten pupils and three for primary pupils. Before the work, care teachers had to use the dining hall or corridors when working with children. Pedagogical director Shipra De Geest said the new rooms changed that arrangement.

The site now includes a new sports hall of about 800 square meters, large enough for three classes to hold physical education lessons at the same time. The hall is reserved for secondary pupils, but primary pupils can use the secondary school’s sports room. A multisport court was also built next to the hall.
