Álvaro Fidalgo “intervened” in Carlos Álvarez’s move to América; here’s what El Maguito told him

Carlos Álvarez has landed in Mexico to begin his new adventure with América, and he acknowledged that former club player Álvaro Fidalgo helped persuade him to make the move. The 23-year-old arrived at Mexico City International Airport on Saturday, expressing his excitement about joining the capital club.

Álvarez, a Spanish left-footed player who became an idol at Levante, is América’s fourth signing for the Apertura 2026 tournament. He said he felt “very excited and eager” to show his football with the Águilas after leaving European football for his first experience outside Spain.

Before making his decision, Álvarez spoke with Fidalgo, the former América player known to supporters as El Maguito. “I spoke with Fidalgo beforehand... He told me it was the ideal place,” Álvarez said while discussing the advice that influenced his arrival at the Coapa institution.

The newcomer also described himself as “Excited. Very excited” as he signed América shirts at the airport. He will have to wait until Monday to meet his new teammates, who are returning to Mexico after their Leagues Cup involvement. On Sunday, they are scheduled to play León in Houston for third place.

Álvarez, who stands 1.68 meters tall and came through Sevilla’s system, joins striker Miguel Borja, left winger Óscar Perea and defensive midfielder Edwin Cerrillo as América’s signings so far. The club still wants to add two more players this semester, with a center-back and another midfielder listed as priorities by the board and Uruguayan coach Guillermo Almada. Álvarez is also set to play at the historic Azteca Stadium, now called Banorte.
