Ambassador Johnson acknowledges security for avocado inspectors in Michoacán; calls it beneficial for both nations

U.S. Ambassador to Mexico, Ronald Johnson, has acknowledged the Mexican government's efforts in providing security for U.S. avocado inspectors in Michoacán. This recognition comes after a temporary suspension of activities due to threats against American personnel.

Johnson expressed appreciation for President Claudia Sheinbaum's leadership and the security commitments made by officials including Omar García Harfuch, Secretary of National Defense, and Columba López Gutiérrez, Secretary of Agriculture and Rural Development. He emphasized that the avocado business is mutually beneficial for both the United States and Mexico.

The U.S. government partially resumed its inspection activities in Tancítaro, Tacámbaro, Uruapan, and along the corridor between Morelia and Pátzcuaro on Saturday. This phased resumption is part of an ongoing process to establish the necessary conditions for a full return of activities. Ambassador Johnson noted that under the leadership of President Donald Trump and President Sheinbaum, cooperation between the two nations continues to yield positive results.

This development follows a travel advisory issued by the U.S. State Department, which maintained a Level 3 'reconsider travel' recommendation for Michoacán due to crime and kidnapping risks. However, the partial resumption of avocado inspections signals a step towards normalizing trade relations under improved security conditions.
