América midfielder wants more Leagues Cup games in Mexico

Erick Sánchez, a midfielder for the Mexican club América, voiced his hope for an increase in Leagues Cup matches hosted in Mexico. The tournament, which began in 2023, has primarily been held in the United States, though four games are scheduled for Mexico in 2026.

Following América's decisive 3-1 victory over San Diego FC at the Estadio Banorte, Sánchez stated that hosting more games domestically would be significant for the entire Mexican league. "I think not only for América, I think it would be important for the entire Mexican league to have more home games. I think you could see, in a way, equal conditions, right?" he remarked.

Sánchez highlighted the positive impact of the recent matches played in Mexico, noting the difference it makes for both the home team and their fans. He emphasized that playing at home, with their supporters present, is crucial for both sides. "Now that they've put these games in, the difference has been seen. And, well, obviously, us playing here at home and them also having their people, it's important for them, as it is for us. That's up to those who manage it," he added.

América, which has not won an international title in a decade, considers the Leagues Cup a priority alongside the CONCACAF Champions Cup. Sánchez, however, remained focused on the immediate future, stating his concentration on the upcoming Sunday match against the Timbers in Portland. "I don't like to speak ahead of time. I am very focused on the next game on Sunday. Obviously, we know it's a very important tournament for us, for the club, and we know that we have to back ourselves to achieve our goal," he concluded.
