América reaches 10 years without an international title after Leagues Cup failure

América’s latest Leagues Cup failure has extended the Mexican club’s international drought to 10 years.

The last time the Águilas won a title outside domestic competition was the 2016 Concacaf Champions League. Ignacio Ambriz coached the team when it defeated Tigres at the Estadio Azteca.

Since then, América has cycled through coaches including Miguel Herrera, Santiago Solari, Fernando Ortiz and André Jardine without winning an international competition. Solari took the team closest to ending the drought, but América lost the 2021 Concacaf Champions League final to Monterrey.

The recent record has included repeated early exits and several absences. América did not participate in 2016-17, 2019, 2022 or 2023. It lost in the semifinals to Toronto in 2018, Los Angeles FC in 2020 and Pachuca in 2024. It fell to Monterrey in the 2021 final and lost to Cruz Azul in the 2025 quarterfinals.

The club’s Leagues Cup record has also brought disappointment: elimination by Nashville in the 2023 round of 16, a penalty-shootout loss to Colorado Rapids in the 2024 quarterfinals, a first-round exit in 2025 and a semifinal defeat to Monterrey in 2026.
