America's Russell breaks Amusan's 100m hurdles world record

Olympic champion Masai Russell has achieved a monumental feat, breaking Tobi Amusan's world record in the women's 100m hurdles. Russell's stunning performance of 12.09 seconds at the Zurich Diamond League on Thursday officially ends the Nigerian athlete's four-year dominance in the event.

The American sprinter edged out Amusan, who finished second with a time of 12.23 seconds. This victory marks a significant moment for Russell, who had previously come close to breaking the record earlier this year. At the Xiamen Diamond League in May, she ran 12.14 seconds, making her the second-fastest woman in the event's history at that time.

Amusan had set the previous world record of 12.12 seconds during the semi-finals of the 2022 World Championships in Eugene, Oregon. Although she later won the final with a time of 12.06 seconds, that mark did not stand as a world record due to excessive tailwind.

Russell's 12.09-second run in Zurich now positions her as the first woman to surpass Amusan's previous record, solidifying her place in athletics history. The event showcased a thrilling display of speed and determination, highlighting the intense competition in women's hurdling.
