American Airlines tightens flight refund policy

American Airlines has made its flight cancellation and refund policy more restrictive, potentially leaving passengers unable to recoup costs for disrupted travel. The airline's 24-hour refund policy now applies only to tickets booked at least one week in advance of the flight's departure. Previously, this policy covered flights departing at least two days later.

The change, which took effect Wednesday, means travelers are only entitled to full refunds for trips canceled within 24 hours of booking if the flight is scheduled to depart at least a week later. The Department of Transportation mandates that airlines offer refunds for flights booked at least a week out and canceled within 24 hours, but allows airlines to expand this policy for closer departures. Airlines can also choose to let customers hold a reservation at the quoted price for 24 hours instead of offering a refund.

American Airlines stated that it also allows customers to hold a booking for 24 hours free of charge if their travel plans are uncertain. The airline's revised refund policy now mirrors those of JetBlue, Southwest Airlines, and United Airlines. Delta Air Lines, however, continues to offer refunds within 24 hours of booking for any flight, regardless of its departure date.
