American Airlines to resume direct Miami-Caracas flights after Maiquetía reopening

American Airlines will resume daily commercial flights between Miami and Caracas on September 3, following the reopening of Venezuela’s main airport, Simón Bolívar International Airport in Maiquetía.

The airport has restarted commercial operations from a provisional modular complex installed in its parking areas. The temporary facility can handle 2,168 passengers after structural damage caused by magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 earthquakes that killed more than 6,500 people in Venezuela.

“We plan to resume the route on September 3 between Miami International Airport and Simón Bolívar International Airport in Maiquetía,” the airline said in an emailed statement to international news agencies.

During the disruption, American Airlines continued daily flights to Maracaibo, a service launched on July 14, to help move passengers toward the capital. The airline also coordinated a direct humanitarian air bridge to Caracas in the weeks after the earthquakes.

Laser Airlines and U.S. carrier Global X had already resumed service from the temporary facilities. The Miami-Caracas route will reconnect the more than 254,000 Venezuelans living in the Miami metropolitan area, many of them concentrated in Doral.
