American Jewish leaders express unified alarm over emerging Iran deal

American Jewish leaders across the political spectrum are expressing unified alarm over a recently announced deal between the United States and Iran. Unlike in 2018, when a previous Iran nuclear deal divided the community, current leaders on both the right and left share significant concerns, even as the deal's terms remain officially unclear.

President Trump announced the deal on Sunday night, emphasizing that it would reopen the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran had closed after a war began on February 28. US Vice President JD Vance stated that the agreement includes substantial sanctions relief in exchange for Iran abandoning its nuclear weapons program. However, significant questions persist regarding the concessions Iran has made on its nuclear front.

Furthermore, there are no indications that critical issues for Israeli security, such as Tehran's ballistic missile program and its network of proxies, have been addressed in the agreement. Israel, despite jointly fighting the war with the US in February, was not a party to the negotiations and has faced criticism from Trump for potentially jeopardizing talks.

Donald Trump was so desperate to get a deal with Iran that he was unabashedly willing to push Israel aside, demonstrating, yet again, that Trump has no loyalty or commitment to anyone other than himself.

Halie Soifer, CEO of the Jewish Democratic Council of America, described the deal as "an admission of defeat by the United States" and criticized Trump for being "desperate to get a deal with Iran...willing to push Israel aside." The right-wing Zionist Organization of America, while thanking Trump for confronting Iran, echoed concerns similar to those raised about the previous JCPOA deal. President Morton Klein urged the administration to disclose the terms, stating that "the little that we know is deeply problematic."
