Amit Shah launches Nasha Mukt Bharat 2029 roadmap, vows to stop narcotics crossing India's borders

Amit Shah has promised that not a single gram of narcotics will enter or leave India through its borders as he unveiled the Nasha Mukt Bharat 2029 roadmap for a drug-free India.

The plan focuses on three fronts: reducing supply, reducing demand and limiting harm. Shah said the government began a coordinated campaign against drug networks in 2019, replacing what he described as fragmented action by separate agencies with a national and continuous effort.

A four-tier NCORD mechanism now operates at the apex, executive, state and district levels. The government has also created Anti-Narcotics Task Forces in every state and union territory, along with a Joint Coordination Committee intended to bring central agencies and state authorities together on major networks, interstate links and operational gaps.

Other measures include a national helpline for young people recovering from drug addiction, greater manpower and zonal coverage, and NIDAN, a national database of narcotics offenders. Shah also cited data-driven mapping of drug networks, hotspots, methods and seizures, as well as financial investigations targeting hawala transactions, benami properties, bank accounts and proceeds of crime.

He said agencies seized more than 29,968 kilograms of synthetic drugs worth over 19,600 crore rupees between 2020 and July 2026. From 2019 through July 2026, total seizures of narcotic and psychotropic substances reached 93.34 lakh kilograms, he said. Authorities also confiscated properties worth 1,841 crore rupees in 3,016 cases between 2024 and June 2026. Shah was in Goa for an official visit and a security review before cancelling his events and returning to Delhi after a building collapse trapped and killed several people.

Before 2014, action against narcotics was done in bits and pieces and in isolated silos; the scope of action was limited to small seizures and small-time accused. After becoming the Home Minister in 2019, I ensured that the fight against narcotics transitions from files and isolated actions by different agencies into a national, coordinated, and continuous campaign.
