Amotekun, NDLEA collaborate to end drug abuse in Oyo

Oyo’s Amotekun Corps and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency are strengthening cooperation to tackle drug abuse and the security problems linked to it across the state.

The partnership received fresh emphasis during a one-day NDLEA sensitisation programme for Amotekun operatives. Oyo State Commissioner for Information Dotun Oyelade said the programme focused on preventing drug abuse, identifying substance-related risks, promoting healthy coping strategies and encouraging responsible conduct.

The collaboration aims to focus on drug abuse prevention, identification of substance-related risks, healthy coping strategies, responsible conduct and community-based approaches to promoting drug-free communities.

Amotekun Commandant Col. Olayinka Olayanju, represented by Director of Finance and Accounts Adigun Yetunde, welcomed the initiative and called for continuous training. He said a stronger understanding of substance abuse would help officers recognise emerging risks, respond appropriately and contribute more effectively to prevention efforts in their areas of operation.

Olayanju urged personnel to apply the training through responsible observation, information gathering and cooperation with relevant agencies. He said a professional, community-oriented approach would strengthen public confidence and support efforts to build safer, drug-free communities.

NDLEA Staff Officer for Drug Integrity Test O. A. Achichi said the response to drug abuse requires security agencies, families, schools, community leaders and other stakeholders to work together. He urged officers to maintain professionalism, stressing that suspicion should not be treated as proof. Personnel should observe, verify and document relevant information before referring cases to the NDLEA or another competent agency.
