Amy Winehouse's father ordered to pay over 8 million after losing lawsuit

Mitch Winehouse, the father of the late Grammy-winning singer Amy Winehouse, must pay approximately 964,000 British pounds (about 8.4 million Danish kroner) to two of his daughter's friends. A court delivered the ruling after Mitch Winehouse lost a lawsuit he initiated against Naomi Parry and Catriona Gourlay.

Last December, Mitch Winehouse sued Parry and Gourlay, alleging they had no right to sell some of Amy Winehouse's clothing and other items at auction for significant sums. However, in April, Judge Sarah Clarke KC dismissed the claim, stating that Mitch Winehouse had been aware of the sales all along.

On Wednesday, the judge further criticized his actions, noting that "the plaintiff chose to bring a weak lawsuit in itself." The ruling stated that Mitch Winehouse's "conscious and deliberate" actions against the two women, described as having "faithfully stood by Amy's side," made his "unreasonable behavior particularly serious," according to AFP.

Mitch Winehouse is required to pay preliminary sums of 569,330 pounds to Parry and 394,521 pounds to Gourlay within two weeks. He must also cover the women's legal costs on an indemnity basis, meaning he will pay their actual expenses, including lawyer fees. Parry's costs were estimated at 715,361 pounds and Gourlay's at 487,132 pounds in April. Mitch Winehouse's own expenses in the case reportedly exceeded 950,000 pounds.

The friends sold a total of 155 of the singer's items at auction between 2021 and 2023, reportedly earning around 1.4 million dollars (nearly 9.2 million kroner). Amy Winehouse, known internationally for her 2006 album "Back to Black" and the hit song "Rehab," died of alcohol poisoning at age 27.
