"An Anxiety Never Felt Before": Anderlecht Resident Testifies to Explosions

A resident of Anderlecht, Belgium, has described an "anxiety never felt before" as a series of explosions rocks the municipality, marking the third such incident in a short period.

The explosions, occurring on consecutive nights, have instilled a deep sense of fear among locals. One resident, speaking anonymously under the pseudonym Nel, recounted being woken by the blast, immediately recognizing it as more than just fireworks. "It was immediately clear that it was more than fireworks or the small bombs that young people throw around," she said.

This is an anxiety that I have never felt before. It feels life-threatening. My neighbors are experiencing the same fear.

Nel noted a significant increase in violence in the neighborhood over the past few years, escalating from shootings to include Molotov cocktails, firebombs, and car arsons. Despite the pervasive fear, which she describes as "life-threatening," Nel expressed a desire to remain in her beloved neighborhood, even though the violence is concentrated in surrounding streets.

Residents are attempting to maintain normalcy, but the nightly violence leaves a lasting impact. Nel shared her constant worry for her housemates when they return home late, fearing the worst after hearing gunshots on the street. She believes the police could do more to address the escalating situation, but remains committed to her home despite the palpable fear.
