An intelligence report, Trump-era timing and the oil lobby: The government advances its Malvinas operation

The government found a way to put Javier Milei back at the center of Argentina’s political agenda: harden the claim over the Malvinas and keep the details hidden until the last moment. The operation combined an intelligence report, diplomatic preparations and a burst of attention from Washington.

According to sources familiar with the matter, the State Intelligence Secretariat, or SIDE, warned of the urgency of responding to the advance toward oil extraction in the South Atlantic. The report included information about companies operating illegally around the islands, under what the article describes as the United Kingdom’s illegitimate administration of the Malvinas. The Foreign Ministry had already begun diplomatic efforts on the issue.

Then came a report in The Telegraph that Donald Trump was pressuring Britain to change its position on the islands. Trump later expressed the idea in his own words, even suggesting that he might not help Britain in the event of a conflict. He also accused Britain of “misbehaving” as a military ally in NATO.

That backdrop allowed Milei’s government to reclaim the initiative on an issue of deep sensitivity for Argentines while leaving the opposition exposed. Sources said strategist Santiago Caputo brought the concern to the president, together with the SIDE report and an almost finished speech, and suggested that the government take action.

Preparations accelerated from Sunday through the national broadcast on Thursday. Officials from Caputo’s team, the Foreign Ministry, the Defense Ministry, the Legal and Technical Secretariat and SIDE worked to finalize the message. The government deliberately kept the broadcast secret to build anticipation. After it aired, officials welcomed the reaction, including heated debates within opposition circles over the quality of the move.
