The performance of Nigeria's Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) Result Viewing Portal (IReV) during the recent Osun governorship election provides a crucial test case for its readiness ahead of the broader 2026 general election cycle.

The IReV platform was established to enhance transparency by making electronic copies of polling unit result sheets publicly accessible. This allows citizens, political parties, journalists, and observers to track the electoral process and cross-reference results presented during collation with the original polling unit records.

During the Osun election, which involved 3,763 polling units, the IReV portal demonstrated a mixed but ultimately substantial performance. Initial results began appearing shortly after voting concluded, with approximately 11.6% uploaded by 4:12 p.m. on election day. This figure grew to 65.45% by later in the afternoon and reached 87.5% by 9:30 p.m., indicating relatively rapid transmission in the early hours.

However, the transmission pace slowed considerably in the evening, with the number of uploads remaining static for a period. Uploading resumed overnight, and by Sunday morning, August 16, coverage had reached 98.06%, with 3,690 out of 3,763 expected results available. This late-night surge suggests that while the portal experienced periods of reduced activity, it ultimately achieved widespread coverage, offering a valuable tool for election monitoring.
