Anambra State Urges Medical Care Over Prayers for Health Emergencies

Anambra State's Ministry of Health is intensifying public health education to combat the dangerous over-reliance on prayers for medical conditions, urging residents to seek timely medical attention.

Dr. Anaeme Cyril, Director of Public Health, stressed the importance of informed health decisions at a workshop in Awka. He decried practices where individuals turn to prayer houses instead of hospitals during emergencies. Cyril recounted a tragic incident where an accident victim, a school child, was taken to a prayer house instead of a nearby hospital, with potentially fatal results. He emphasized that while prayer holds personal significance, it must not replace essential medical intervention in critical situations.

Residents need to make informed decisions about their health and seek appropriate medical care when necessary.

The ministry also highlighted the severe consequences of pregnant women ignoring professional medical advice. Dr. Cyril cited cases of complications, including babies born with HIV, and a woman who died attempting a vaginal delivery after two previous Cesarean sections, despite medical warnings. These incidents underscore the critical need for sustained health education to ensure people understand and follow qualified medical guidance. Stakeholders are working to develop a comprehensive health promotion framework for the state.
