Ancient charioteer who made a Vojvodina village famous: The mysterious guardian of Dupljaja

A mysterious Bronze Age artifact, known as the Dupljaja Cart, discovered in 1903 near the Vojvodina village of Dupljaja, continues to intrigue archaeologists both domestically and internationally. This ancient object, depicting a figure driving a peculiar vehicle with ducks, is considered one of the most important finds in Southeastern Europe.

Remarkably, a stylized representation of this ancient "charioteer" and his vehicle is now imprinted as a hologram on Serbian vehicle registration cards. This integration means that millions of Serbian citizens carry a piece of prehistoric art and history in their wallets, often without realizing its significance. The artifact was officially declared a national cultural treasure late last year, recognized for its exceptional artistry and its reflection of the complex spiritual and social life of its creators.

Archaeologists have proposed various interpretations of the Dupljaja Cart. Some believe it to be a votive object of great religious importance, while others, using 3D technology, suggest it is a miniature version of a real vehicle. The artifact, made of baked clay over 3,500 years ago, features a human-like figure with a bird's beak, wearing a bell-shaped robe, and standing on a three-wheeled vehicle adorned with water birds. Intricate spirals, triangles, and circles are carved across the figure and its attire. A smaller, possibly incomplete version exists in another museum, featuring different details and symbols like swastikas.
