Andersson: Sweden Democrats' ambitions for power have no limits

Magdalena Andersson says a future right-wing government could be dominated by Sweden Democrat ministers, after party leader Jimmie Åkesson said he would seek 12 to 14 ministerial posts if the right wins the election in less than two weeks.

“It is obvious that the Sweden Democrats' ambitions for power have no limits,” Andersson said. She has long warned that a vote for the parties behind the Tidö agreement could result in 12 Sweden Democrat ministers. Åkesson said he could negotiate over the number of ministers if he received sufficiently strong concessions on policy.

Andersson said the new demand would allow the Sweden Democrats to dominate the government. She argued that this would produce a different Sweden, particularly if the party held the foreign and defense portfolios during what she described as a turbulent international situation.

Asked whether her message relied on frightening voters with the Sweden Democrats, Andersson called it consumer information. “We risk getting a government with 12 to 14 Sweden Democrat ministers who completely dominate government power and use their platforms as ministers to spread a harsher and colder tone in public debate,” she said.

Andersson described such a government as the most right-wing radical in modern Swedish history. Her opponents have made a similar claim about her own potential governing base, saying it would produce the most left-wing radical government. Asked how many Left Party ministers would serve in her government, she said she was not distributing ministerial posts and that the Left Party still had a long way to go.
