Angela Davis draws massive crowds at UNAM in Mexico City

The National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) buzzed with energy as thousands of people flocked to its facilities to hear American activist, philosopher, and politician Angela Davis speak. The event, "Abolition, Feminism, Now!," held at the Sala Miguel Covarrubias in the Centro Cultural Universitario, saw a continuous stream of attendees eager to engage with Davis's ideas.

Angela Davis, a prominent African American academic and Marxist thinker, is a professor in the History of Consciousness Department at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Her theoretical work, as highlighted by UNAM's Center for Gender Studies and Research (CIEG), intricately connects feminism, critiques of capitalism, anti-racist struggles, and analyses of the penal system.

Her influential book, "Women, Race and Class," is noted for challenging traditional notions of motherhood and dissecting power structures. Academic analyses suggest Davis's perspectives have been crucial in examining Black men beyond racial stereotypes and questioning the prison system's ideology. Key themes in her research include the abolition of prisons as an alternative to traditional justice, the intersection of race, gender, and class in reproductive rights, a commitment to international liberation causes, and the linkage of sexism, classism, and structural racism.

Davis's visit to UNAM is a highlight of the 8th International Book Fair of University Women and Men (FILUNI 2026), running from August 25-30. She is participating in a keynote conference alongside theorist Gina Dent, moderated by Amneris Chaparro Martínez, director of CIEG.
