Ankara extends forest entry and fire ban until October 2026 amid wildfire risk

Ankara's governor has extended a ban on entering forest areas and lighting fires across the province until October 15, 2026. This measure is a response to the heightened risk of forest fires, exacerbated by adverse climate conditions and extreme temperatures. The provincial administration announced that the prohibition now includes lighting fires in all open areas adjacent to forests, such as fields, vineyards, and gardens. This expanded restriction aims to curb incidents stemming from human carelessness, such as stubble burning or fires set for clearing agricultural land. The majority of recent fires in the region have originated in rural areas near forests due to such activities. Previously, a ban on entering forest areas was in effect until September 30, 2026. The decision to extend this and other preventive measures reflects the ongoing severity of the wildfire threat. The authorities will maintain continuous surveillance over fire-risk rural areas and forest peripheries with the help of law enforcement, forest protection teams, and other relevant institutions. Local neighborhood heads (muhtars) are tasked with monitoring their areas for individuals lighting fires and reporting any violations immediately. Individuals found in violation of these regulations will be subject to immediate legal and administrative proceedings. Furthermore, they will be held responsible for any damages incurred and associated administrative costs. The governor's office also called upon public institutions, private sector companies, and industrial organizations to implement necessary precautions within their jurisdictions, urging close coordination among all entities involved in monitoring and enforcement.
